It can be a little surprising to hear us talking about spring fabrics while the Arizona summer is still in full swing. But that's one of the fun realities of running a quilt shop—we're almost always living a season or two ahead.
Long before a quilt kit appears on our website, there's months of planning, testing, and decision-making happening behind the scenes.
Let's take you along for the journey.
It Starts with Fabric
Most fabric collections are shown to quilt shops six to twelve months before they arrive.
That means we're making decisions based on sample swatches, digital mockups, and lots of imagination. Sometimes we know immediately a collection belongs at West Valley Quilting. Other times we spend days comparing collections before making a final decision.
Finding the Right Pattern
Once we've chosen a fabric collection, the search begins for the perfect pattern.
We ask questions like:
- Does it showcase the prints?
- Is it beginner friendly?
- Will customers enjoy making it?
- Does it feel fresh instead of looking like every other kit?
Sometimes we find the perfect pattern right away. Other times we audition several before one feels right.
Building the Fabric Pull
This is one of our favorite parts.
A quilt kit isn't simply every fabric in a collection.
We often swap fabrics, adjust values, or introduce a coordinating print if it helps the quilt come together. The goal is a finished quilt that catches your eye the moment you see it.
Sewing the Sample
Next comes making the quilt.
This step lets us:
- verify the pattern
- confirm fabric quantities
- discover any helpful construction tips
- decide how we'd recommend approaching tricky sections
By the time you receive your kit, we've already walked the path ourselves.
Quilting Makes the Difference
Once the top is finished, it's time for James and Miss Amara to take over.
Choosing the quilting design, thread color, and batting can completely change the personality of the quilt. We spend time finding combinations that complement the piecing without overpowering it.
Photography and Product Information
A beautiful quilt deserves good photography.
Then we write the product description, calculate kit quantities, organize inventory, and prepare everything for the website and social media.
Only after all of that does the kit finally make its debut.
Why We Plan So Far Ahead
Planning months in advance helps us:
- have samples ready when fabrics arrive
- make sure patterns are available
- coordinate quilting schedules
- avoid disappointing customers with limited quantities
- introduce collections while they're still fresh
It's a lot of work, but it's one of our favorite parts of running the shop.

Every quilt kit has a story before it ever reaches your sewing room. Sometimes that story follows the pattern designer's original vision, and sometimes it includes a few creative touches from us to better showcase a fabric collection.
